I'm certain I've heard this riff before, I think in a jazz song.

Phil starts it at 10:33 in track 20.

Phil only plays it for a few seconds there!
But it sounds to me like an undeveloped version of a riff he plays countless times in '73. It was discussed in this thread -
http://transitiveaxis.forumup.us/viewtopic.php?t=1115&;mforum=transitiveaxis
Examples are 6/24/73 DS (6:30), 9/11/73 DS (11m), 2/26/73 DS (11m), and plenty of others.

Can anyone tell the big difference between the riff played at around 4:30-5 min into the other one from 2-28 (DP 28) and the riff played on 6/24, 2/26 dark stars?

they are pretty similar, but the riff that phil plays in dark star is in 6 and the one that he plays in other one is in 5. and phil actually tries to initiate the 5 riff in the 2/28 dark star (10:20-11:00), but nobody else jumps on it so he abandons it and plays the 6 riff instead. check it out- you can hear them back to back for comparison.

Yes, that's true - I noticed in the Transitive Axis thread that he starts the riff in 5 on 2/26, then switches to 6. But in the 2/28 Other One, he stays in 5. The mysteries of musicians...

Phil in that time span also sampled some of A Love Supreme and that seems to be the case here.

nice...

I was close with the guess for DP28.

There was a good conversation about this piece at another forum where I think they dubbed it the six jam based on its time signature. 6-24-73 has likely the best rendition of this riff.

well right around where you suggest to start phil plays a riff that I've heard him play in more definition in another show. Having listened to so many of these jams from july 72 to march of 73, it can be tough to say which is from when. I believe I am thinking of the DP 28 TOO from 2-28-73. good luck, phil has plenty of random jazz riffs that he either stole or came up with on his own.

Sounds really close to "My Favorite Things" to me at the start, but then they drift off and sorta revisit it back and forth - just a guess dude. Good question though.

Skobud got there first. I agree with you, Skobud; I'm sure it's My Favorite Things - the John Coltrane performances of course. Here's the studio version:
